Guide To Toto Asia: The Intermediate Guide To Toto Asia

The Band Toto Asia

Toto was expanding its production facilities overseas and operating in France, Germany, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. North America was seen as an area of growth for toilets and bidet seats, as opposed its "base" markets in Japan and China.

Dhaniram Toto was documenting Toto words to ensure the future generations could read them. However, many words were being replaced with foreign ones, such as dui, which is Bengali for verandah.

Origins

Established in 1917, Toto's early years mirrored Japan's economic growth. In the first half, Toto produced goods to meet the demand for modern, brand new urban housing. To achieve this, it employed the country's first tunnel kiln to produce ceramics in a continuous flow. It also pioneered the use of automation to control production, allowing for greater efficiency and consistency.

The company began expanding overseas in the late 1980s to benefit from new markets and sales opportunities. It launched the Cera Trading Company, importing and selling other manufacturers' products to complement its own line of sanitary earthenware and plumbing fittings. This strategy increased sales and increased the company's market share.

In the 1990s, Toto had shifted its emphasis on research and development for water-related household appliances. It also redesigned its system of distribution to better serve its customers and improve profit. The company adopted a just-in-time approach to supply chain management and applied the same approach in its sales strategy. This led to a higher level of customer satisfaction.

Toto continued to innovate toilet technology. The latest toilet from the company features a powerful, environmentally-friendly tornado flush. Toto uses recycled water in its manufacturing process, and has a green purchasing policy. Toto also produces faucets, bathtubs and hand dryers that have higher energy efficiency than conventional models.

The first Toto museum opened in 2015. It features exhibits on Toto's most famous products, their evolution, the group companies (all of which are made from ceramics), the history of plumbing, and other products like bath units. In an additional gallery, you can view Toto products that are sold across the world. The museum also has a bathroom with a WASHLET as well as other toilet innovations.

Before the formation of Toto members of the group performed sessions for a variety of musicians. Boz Scaggs' album Silk Degrees featured keyboardist David Paich and guitarists Mike Porcaro & Steve Lukather, drummers Jeff Porcaro & Steve Lukather. They also performed on albums by Steely Don, Seals and Crofts and Sonny and Cher.

Discography

With a name like Asia, you would think that the group would be prog queens and kings - but it's actually a fairly simple rock band. The band was initially four members and released two albums in 1979, the self-titled debut album and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. The group has a wide musical background, but their greatest success came in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a huge blockbuster, however it did not come without its own set of issues. Record companies put the band on spot with the ultimatum "give us an album that's a smash or we'll drop you" and the pressure was on them to deliver. Toto was able to do this feat with the help of the smash hit "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery is a result of their previous experience since the members were session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, and Seals and Crofts prior to forming the group. Their sonic trademark has become the standard for  1980s music, and has inspired a lot of contemporary artists.

The album begins with a hefty dose of hard rock with tracks like Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write amazing AOR songs that slowly work their hooks into your. The album also contains slow, jazzier tracks like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album concludes with Great Expectations. This song mixes folk and the distorted AOR, which should appear completely unnatural, but actually is very effective.

After Toto IV, the band's fortunes began to decline. David Hungate left the band to focus on his solo career, and the band had a variety of drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in the after he was charged with drug abuse. the group continued to perform as a trio with Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.

Toto released Isolation despite the turbulence. It wasn't as popular as IV. However, the group managed to release another chart-topping album in the year 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. This album marked the end of Toto's lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new singer.

Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album is an attempt to return to the classic sextet format and a more consistent, stronger effort that had a more grittier edge. The more edgy sound of the album was a reflection of the maturation of the group and featured drummer Bobby Kimball's increased ability on the drums and a more confident, mature vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. Keyboardist David Paich's work was more refined, sharper and less cloned previously recorded recordings.

After touring to promote their album, the group recorded the band's Amsterdam live concert that was released by Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. A new studio album followed a few months later, and the group embarked on an extensive world tour in support of the album. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started looking through old tapes and demos for an album that would feature songs that were never recorded before. It was released in the form of a double-album called Then and Now in 2001. It was the first album in the band's history that did not include any single song that had the word "A" in its title and it included one previously unreleased track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth record, Old Is New was not a commercial success and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis that limited his singing ability. Additionally, Hungate returned to Nashville, while drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.

Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the founding members of Asia The original Asia members met in England in the early part of 2006 to discuss the possibility that the group could be reformed. The lineup, which was minus Howe (who was working with Yes at the time) was eventually referred to as Toto XIV and toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The group also had the appearance of singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
